2017 Spring  Curatorial & Collections Internship

Fraunces Tavern Museum’s mission is to educate the public and create genuine appreciation for about New York City history as it relates to Colonial America, the Revolutionary War, and the Early Republic.  The Museum was founded in 1907 by Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York, Inc.  Housed in historic Fraunces Tavern, the permanent collection focuses on 18th and 19th century buildings, period rooms, prints, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, and manuscripts relating to or reflecting aspects of early American culture and history.  Also included in the collection are items associated with the history of the Sons of the Revolution of the State of New York.

In order to better serve the community and fulfill the mission, the Museum has re-housed its collection and a complete inventory must be completed.  Reporting to the Executive Director, intern’s duties will include:


  1.  Collection inventory including condition reporting
  2.  Learning artifact preservation best practices
  3.  Exhibition installation
  4.  Working with the collection database, PastPerfect 5.0
  5.  Assist with registrar activities
  6.  Day-to-Day office operations

The internship is from January to May (flexible dates).  It is unpaid.  No room and board available.

Qualifications:

Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate studies (history, politics, English, or similar) or graduate studies (museum studies, public history, education, American History or similar), or have completed either/or.  Intern should be detail oriented, patient, organized, and able to work independently.  Must be able to climb stairs and ladders.  A solid Early American, Colonial American and Revolutionary War history a plus.  An in person interview is required.
