Interpretive Resource Specialist III- Missouri State Museum/Jefferson Landing State Historic Site – Jefferson City, MO

Job duties:

·         Supervises, trains, and evaluates three Interpretive Resource Specialists I/II responsible for programming, outreach, interpretation, and retail sales at the Missouri State Museum and Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. Also sets schedule for the full time staff.

·         Recruits, supervises, and trains 12-20 seasonal and volunteer staff engaged in tasks related to interpretation of Missouri’s history and resources.

·         Supervises daily operations of the Missouri State Museum and Missouri Capitol Tours, and staffing of Jefferson Landing State Historic Site.

·         Supervises daily operations of gift shops at Missouri State Museum and Jefferson Landing State Historic Site.

·         Assumes responsibility the Missouri State Museum and Jefferson Landing in the absence of the facility manager and assistant facility manager.

·         Recommends budget requests and tracks expenditures for interpretation and retail sales at museum/site gift shops.

·         Develops and maintains a comprehensive knowledge of the policies, programs, and procedures related to Missouri State Parks, and the Missouri State Museum.

·         Drafts and maintains the Missouri State Museum/Jefferson Landing interpretation plan and assists with the development and maintenance of operations and cultural resource plans.

·         Prepares and maintains program and overall attendance reports for the Museum and Jefferson Landing SHS.

·         Opens and closes the museum and Jefferson Landing State Historic Site.

·         Develops and maintains a working knowledge of the Missouri State Capitol building and connects with building maintenance and facility managers to promote visitor safety and enjoyment of the capitol.

·         Develops and maintains working relationship with staff of state officials and state agency staff working in the Capitol as the “go to” for information on capitol tours, the Museum, and Jefferson Landing.

·         Develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, schools officials, homeschool organizations, and the general public.

·         Responsible for tracking and maintaining inventory of electronic equipment used by the interpretive staff.

·         Responsible for tracking and maintaining assignment of access keys for interpretive staff for the Museum and historic site. Works with Office of Administration on maintaining key assignments for access to tours stops in the Capitol.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·         Comprehensive knowledge of the natural and cultural resources of assigned state park(s) and/or historic site(s), and the State of Missouri.

·         Comprehensive knowledge of the policies, programs, and procedures related to state park and/or historic site operations.

·         Comprehensive knowledge of natural and/or cultural history research and resource management methods and techniques.
Intermediate knowledge of historic structure construction and repair methods, and the proper utilization and care of equipment used in interpretive operations and/or resource management.

·         Intermediate knowledge of the proper techniques for handling, cataloging, cleaning and preserving natural history objects and/or historic and archeological artifacts.

·         Ability to prepare and present information about the natural and cultural history of state parks and/or historic sites, and to develop related exhibits.

·         Ability to train, supervise and evaluate staff.

·         Ability to conduct research and develop technical reports and interpretive presentations suitable for professional publication.

·         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, school officials, community organizations and the general public.

 

One or more years of experience as an Interpretive Resource Specialist II with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.


OR


A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following:

Environmental, Biological or Natural Sciences, Natural Resources, Resource Management, History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Parks and Outdoor Recreation, or a closely related field; and,


Three or more years of experience in research, development and/or presentation of interpretive and educational programs in a park, historic site or museum; management of natural and/or cultural resources; researching and/or presenting information relating to artifacts or archaeological sites; teaching science or history; or comparable experience in a conservation or environmental program.


(Additional qualifying experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education.)


(Earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college or university in the specified areas may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience at a rate of 24 earned graduate credit hours for one year.)

NOTES:


Additional Salary Information: Employees are paid semi-monthly. Semi-monthly salary for this position is $1,596.00 - $2,261.50.

The Missouri State Museum is part of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks. The State Museum develops interpretive exhibits and provides educational programming at the museum and Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. Museum staff act as stewards of a large collection of artifacts. The Museum has 9 full-time positions and 12 part-time positions. Full-time employees are classified state employees and receive state employee benefits.
