Mingei International Museum Job Opening

JOB TITLE:  REGISTRAR

JOB LOCATION: Balboa Park, 1439 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101

POSITION TYPE: Full-time, Exempt

GENERAL:

Mingei International Museum is hiring a full-time Registrar. This is a
hands-on position that will require an ability to think strategically
while acting tactically. The position is responsible for managing the
processes of receiving, securing, cataloguing, caring for and
maintaining art works and records for permanent collection objects and
exhibition loans. This includes loans to and from the Museum as well
as acquisitions, both donations and purchases, to the permanent
collection. This position will help in reviewing the collection and
items submitted for the collection in accordance with policies and
procedures established by the Museum. The position will review and
propose necessary changes and manage review of policies from time to
time to meet accreditation requirements for the AAM. S/he will assist
the museum in achieving best practices with regard to the collection
and exhibitions in the area of registration. The position will
supervise registration staff and volunteers; assist photographers,
guest curators and curatorial consultants; assist with installation of
Museum exhibitions and work with the Collections Committee; perform
other duties as assigned.

								Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

At least five years’ experience working with a collection or
exhibitions in an equivalent museum. Demonstrated organizational,
planning and project management skills with exceptional attention to
detail and ability to communicate with and manage a small team

National and international art shipping and logistics experience

Ability to plan, problem-solve and to work independently and collaboratively

3-5 years experience in staff supervision

Demonstrated oral and written communications skills

Commitment to Mingei’s mission and goals

Physical ability to reach, bend, stoop, lift and move file boxes,
pedestals, etc. up to 25 pounds on a regular basis

Familiarity with computers including EmbARK, Word and Excel.
Experience managing digitization and on-line collections highly
desirable.  Flexibility, tact, diplomacy and ability to interact well
with Museum members, volunteers, staff, visitors and the public

Valid CA driver’s license and experience driving a Sprinter van

EDUCATION:  BA, MA or PhD in museum studies or a museum related field
