So you get to do all the leg work and then if anything "outstanding" comes along, they get the right of first refusal? I would not agree to that. If they are not collecting - even on a short-term basis - and something comes along that is appropriate for their institution but also appropriate for yours, well then it should be yours. You can always loan it to them later. On the other hand, if it is not a piece that you would normally collect, accepting it on their behalf and providing short-term storage would certainly be the professional thing to do. However, I agree with Anne Lane - an agreement between boards is needed that covers storage, insurance, etc. Mary Helen Dellinger, Curator Manassas Museum System From: Museum discussion list [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Anne Lane Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2016 2:20 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Donations moratorium Sounds like you get to do all the work and they get to pick and choose. Yes, a signed agreement by all means, and if they expect you to do paperwork and provide storage - well, some compensation should be involved. They are asking if we would be willing to be on a list to receive donations during this time as we share similar collecting policies. We are a county museum and they are a city museum within that county. They are asking us to notify them if any outstanding items that meet their criteria are offered to us. We think a signed agreement between our boards is needs. Have any other museums experienced this request?
