Job Description

DIRECTOR/CURATOR

Reports to:   Miami County Historical Society Board of Directors

Supervises:  Registrar/Collections Manager, Archivist, Administrative Assistant/Gift Shop Manager,           

Status:    Exempt     

Funding:    Miami County, MCHS   Review: Annually  

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director plans and directs all Museum activities and operations; is responsible for acquisitions and donations, scholarship, and attendant programs; assist in all fundraising activities, i.e. capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, and grant writing; recommends policies for Board approval and administers approved policies; maintains ethical and legal compliance with applicable laws and regulations; endeavors to comply with established museum best practices and standards; and other duties and responsibilities as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

Administration and Management       

· Promote professional museum practices to the Board of Directors and Museum staff.

· Work closely with the Board of Directors and its various committees, keeping the Board members appropriately briefed on major issues, seeking out and using their expertise and assuring productive meetings and well-informed decisions; providing leadership in the area of Board recruitment and development; and identifying need for policy development and/or changes.

· Oversee the physical plant and assure its adequate maintenance by working closely with the Building Committee.

· Effectively manage the Museum staff within the Museum's established policies and practices and successfully pursue the stated mission through a well defined and timely strategic plan.

· With guidance from the Board, develop and implement an aggressive marketing program and develop efforts to promote and increase public attendance.

· Develop a proper risk management procedures, including review and purchase of insurance, preparation of MCM facilities report (with assistance from the Building Committee), and evaluation of borrower's reports.  Establishes and implements disaster plan.  With the Assistant Curator, maintains a secured off-site location for the duplicate catalog.

· Perform other duties and responsibilities as determined by the Board of Directors.

Development/Finance        

· Assist in developing a targeted fund raising program to obtain increased support from corporate, foundation, individual, state and federal sources.

· Assist in the progress of development related projects and provide oversight.  Projects include an Endowment Campaign, Planned Giving Program, and Annual Fund Campaign.

· Provide an advisory role for the M100 Club and Membership Campaign.

· Assist in preparing budgets for MCM and MCHS.

· Assist as liaison with President between the County Government and the Museum during the annual County budget cycle.

· Assist in the development of the annual operating and capital budgets, oversee the day-to-day financial position of the Museum and assure that the Board is provided with timely financial data for budgeting decisions and fundraising plans.  Budgeting is to be done by the Treasurer with the assistance of the Finance Committee.

Outreach          

· Serve as spokesperson, representing the Museum to all its constituents including the community, governmental agencies and civic and private organizations, as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Oversee staff's work on a daily basis, providing direction, support, and evaluation; and assure a well run volunteer program.

· Recommend appropriate financial remuneration of staff members to the Board's Finance Committee with approval by the Board of Directors as appropriate.

· Administer the personnel policies of MCHS and MCM.

· Maintain personnel files in a secure location within the Museum.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

· Bachelor's degree, and/or Master's preferred

· Comparable years of direct experience considered.  

· Knowledge of Indiana and /or Miami County History is a plus.

· Ability to maintain accurate records and documents.

· Good organizational skills and self-motivated.

· Good writing and verbal skills.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to work well with others in a team environment.

· Experience using Pastperfect Software and Quickbooks a plus

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

· Sitting at a desk, walking, standing, climbing stairs, hearing (telephone, meetings, etc.), lifting/carrying (up to 40 lbs).

· Typical office environment.

SALARY:

· Annual salary as stipulated by Miami County Historical Society.
