Introduction:

The St. Augustine Historical Society seeks a dynamic Executive Director to provide overall institutional leadership for the Society.  The Society recently completed a strategic planning process and is embarking on a period of growth and development, which the Executive Director will lead. 

The Saint Augustine Historical Society acquires, preserves, and interprets the rich legacy of St. Augustine and its environs by caring for historic properties, archives, and collections, hosting public programs and exhibits, and supporting research and education.  Founded in 1883, the Society owns and operates the Oldest House Museum Complex and the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library, which include three original colonial buildings, and preserves and maintains the colonial-era Llambias House.  It employs a paid staff of six and a core of volunteers, has an annual operating budget of $500,000+ and an endowment.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the day-to-day leader of the St. Augustine Historical Society and its chief spokesperson on public issues pertinent to the historical community in St. Augustine.  The primary duty of the ED is to propose initiatives to the Board of Trustees, to carry out initiatives supported by the Board, and to serve as the legal agent of the Board.  The Board has overall authority and responsibility for deciding polices and in establishing goals for the institution and in annually reviewing the job performance and continuation of or revisions to the ED contract.

Specific duties and responsibilities of the Executive Director include but are not limited to the following:

·         To provide leadership in establishing the goals and objectives for the Society, its promotion, growth, and fundraising.

·         To articulate the vision and mission of the Society, including review, assessment, and implementation of the Society’s Strategic Plan

·         To provide supervision for the paid and volunteer staff in achieving the Society mission.

·         To insure overall safety and preservation of the Society’s properties and exhibits such that they remain safe and attractive to visitors.

·         To provide overall supervision of the financial operations of the Society on a day-to-day basis; to provide a projected annual budget for the Society; to work with the Finance Committee in refining budgetary goals; to provide quarterly financial updates to the Finance Committee; to supervise the fund raising and grant writing activities of the Society; to provide sound and mature advice to the Board about the financial condition of the Society; and to provide a stable administration of all facets of the Society on a day-to-day basis.

·         To recommend and oversee fundraising activities and grant writing approved by the Board.

·         To assign tasks and responsibilities to staff members and volunteers.

·         To oversee production of the Society’s annual journal El Escribano and such other publications as the Society undertakes.

·         To develop and maintain an active annual schedule of public programming and outreach

·         To provide general supervision for membership recruitment and retention

·         To provide general supervision in the creation and development of educational programs designed to further the study of St. Augustine’s history

·         To promote the activities of the Society and the historical legacy of St. Augustine and its environs through an active program of public speaking, scholarship, participation in professional conferences, and as a liaison with other professional and lay groups within the region and state.

·         To supervise the collection and maintenance of all documents relating to the operation of the Society, including the organization of these documents in an easily accessible system and the presentation of information to the Board of Trustees as demanded or required by the Society’s By-Laws.

·         To be the Society's official liaison to local, state and federal agencies regarding the impact of regulation and other decisions, including but not limited to, the protection of historical elements of our county for example, zoning regulations, historic architectural reviews and assessments, and traffic management. 

·         To be the liaison to all private organizations and tourism attractions involved with the preservation and/or promotion of historic St. Augustine.

·         To participate in all committees and meetings of the Board of Trustees on an ex-officio basis

·         To undertake specific tasks at the direction of the Board of Trustees or at the direction of the Executive Committee

 

Minimum Qualifications:

The Executive Director for the St. Augustine Historical Society is required to possess an earned Master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution. Advanced degree and a background in St. Augustine or Florida history are preferred.  Minimum of five years of progressively more responsible administrative experience is required, including demonstrated proficiency in promotion, growth, and fundraising.
