JOB ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PROGRAM MANAGER

STEM Ambassador Program at the University of Utah

http://stem-ambassadors.org

The STEM Ambassador Program at the University of Utah seeks a Program Manager for this program (May 2016 - January 2018, with possible extension, pending future funding) to connect STEM scientists with underserved, "science-inattentive" community groups (e.g.-–those who don't typically seek out science by visiting zoos, aquariums, nature centers, museums, etc.).

Essential functions include:

1.    Oversees administrative matters on operations; contributes to strategic   planning; with co-PIs, provides oversight for all activities.

2.    Works 1-on-1 with STEM scientists and local community groups to create engagement programs appropriate for the selected audience

3.    Cultivates relationships with new community partners and fosters pre-existing connections with local groups

4.    Assists in preparing grant proposals reports, protocols, and publications;

5.    Coordinates training programs; acts as a liaison between internal and external constituencies; serves as project representative;

6.    Forecasts and monitors the program budget; negotiates contracts and service agreements.

7.    Stays abreast of legal issues and makes recommendations for compliance.

8.    Develops systems and maintains records/databases;

9.    Supervises subordinate staff.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

1.    Bachelor degree in informal science education, science communications, or related field, with related experience.  A Masters or PhD. in natural, applied sciences, or education is preferred.

2.    Demonstrated experience coordinating complex projects with multiple partners;

3.    Demonstrated experience in assisting conducting and disseminating research;

4.    Demonstrable ability to use qualitative and quantitative approaches to understand social science data;

5.    Excellent oral and written communication skills

About the Program:

One of society’s current needs is to facilitate the training of scientists to help the public understand and engage with pressing environmental issues. This is particularly important – and particularly difficult – for public audiences that are “science-inattentive” (those who are uninterested, hostile, or do not have access to science and scientists). The National Science Foundation has funded the STEM Ambassador Program, which involves STEM researchers, informal science educators, and community leaders to recruit and guide STEM researchers to create innovative opportunities and trainings for scientists to synergistically engage with science-inattentive public audiences. The project will: 1) ensure that STEM researchers gain appropriate skills and academic rewards; 2) do research on how STEM researchers might shift their self-identity to science communicators and how public groups shift theirs to science learners; and 3) disseminate emerging principles and practices to other institutions.

Salary range: $37,000 to $51,000 per year
