The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) is seeking applications for a full-time, permanent Historian (Art). This position is located in SAAM’s Research and Scholars Center and serves as Executive Editor of American Art, the leading journal in the field, published three times a year in association with the University of Chicago Press. The Executive Editor has full responsibility for the editorial direction of the journal and oversees all production aspects, including the peer-review process, editing, proofreading, and fact-checking. The Executive Editor will be expected to seek out and publish innovative research articles for a broad audience of readers; cultivate relationships with editorial board members and potential authors; and serve in an advisory role for SAAM’s fellowships and academic programs. Candidates must have a background in art history, specifically American art (Ph.D. in art history is preferred); writing and editing experience; and strong organizational skills.
