EDUCATION COORDINATOR , AH-TAH-THI-KI MUSEUM

NATURE OF WORK

The incumbent in this position is responsible for in the creation, organization, implementation and evaluation of educational programs offered by the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum to the general public, student, Tribal Members and community audiences. The incumbent supervises the work of Tour Guides, school interns and volunteers and collaborates with all Departmental Staff as necessary to provide Educational Activities in order to promote exhibits, collections and the Seminole culture to all visitors and general public. This position reports to the Museum Visitor Services and Development Manager or designee and is an exempt position.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

·         Develops educational programs consistent with the Museum’s overall mission and interpretive plan as well as current trends in museum education, and educational standards. Develops, delivers and evaluates programs and events for classes, groups or individuals, often designed to engage students, Tribal Community and public in general in the museum activities and exhibits.

·         Collaborates with Exhibits staff to develop learning strategies and/or educational materials (i.e. Teacher programs, family guides, program guides and other resources) to engage the public attention to the exhibits. Develops activities and/or workshops around particular exhibitions.

·         Coordinates workshops and activities for the Museum and Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) in partnership with storytellers, craftspeople and artists; facilities history-inspired activities in the Tribal community in response to requests from schools and community groups or to promote particular exhibitions.

·         Coordinates with various program committees and other STOF departments to have an effective interaction with the community. Serves as liaison with schools, colleges and general public to promote the use of the collections and activities of the museum in line with the national curriculum.

·         Creates and develops educational resources for visitors, schools, families and special interest groups. Assists in the marketing and promotion campaigns that will accompany the museum activities.

·         Manages and monitors budgets. Trains and supervises staff and volunteers related to educational programs. Researches and requests quotes for educational resources, to support the museum’s learning strategies.

·         Plans, assigns and reviews the work of Tour Guides, school interns and volunteers. Coordinates activities, sets priorities, deadlines, and assigns schedules. Participates in the recruitment, orientation, training and annual performance evaluation of staff.

·         Provides training and technical assistance to staff on operational issues and assists them in resolving problems; instructs staff on practices.

·         Responsible for developing content across social media channels to promote all museum’s exhibits and collections. This would include websites, blog posts, tweets, status updates, pins, photos and videos. Communicates on a daily basis with clients to maintain awareness of updates and offerings.

·         Develops social media program initiatives to improve community size and engagement.

·         Evaluates, tracks and reports educational program performance and outcomes.

·         Establishes policies and procedures that maximize educational goals.

·         Represents and promotes the museum on external educational bodies in order to establish a network of useful and productive partnerships.

·         Attends and participates in departmental meetings and various committees as required. Assists in other operational and functional areas of the Museum as needed.

·         Must adhere to all Seminole Tribe of Florida’s policies and procedures.

·         Performs additional related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of history and traditional arts and crafts of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Knowledge of all types of museum programming (public and non-public).

Knowledge of Past Perfect museum software.

Knowledge and familiarity with the business applications of social media platforms, including; Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Google+, Instagram and more.

Ability to develop and implement the strategic goals and objectives.  

Ability to effectively and professionally represent the Museum to potential collaborative partners.

Ability to devise, research, prepare and deliver exciting and engaging learning sessions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, education or related field required. Master’s degree is preferred. A minimum three (3) years of experience as a tour guide leading a project team and laying out project timelines or working in a museum setting is preferred. Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s license. Knowledge of Past Perfect museum software is preferred. Working knowledge of Seminole Culture and History is preferred. Demonstrate excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrate proficiency utilizing Microsoft software packages. Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Typically, the incumbent will be standing and walking for long periods of time. May sit comfortably to do the work; there will be travel, occasional, bending, carrying of items; may occasionally drive company vehicle.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

While working inside, the Education Coordinator will work in a clean, air-conditioned enclosed area. They spend their time studying the art, crafts, and other exhibits to form an educational program. They may also work with outdoor exhibits. While working outside, the Education Coordinator will be exposed to South Florida weather that includes extreme temperatures, humidity, dust and rain.
