We currently run background checks on all our volunteers when they start, whether they are initially starting as an education volunteer or something else. This way, I’ve found it prevents needing to remember to run the background check later if they choose to volunteer in a different capacity than when they started (a lot of volunteers end up helping in more areas than just one). We have them fill out a background check form, then we send it to our HR department who files them with a contracted company that we use. They might receive more information, but all I generally receive from them is a pass/fail sorta answer. The only time that someone balked at filling out a background check form, I learned that they had recently left another volunteer job when it started requiring background checks too. Not sure if he had something to hide, but he’s been the only one in the past 3.5 yrs that refused to fill one out.

Hi, all!

Currently, our museum does not have education volunteers/docents for school and public programs, but we want to expand opportunities for our current volunteers/docents. There will be specialized training as well as background checks. I’m gathering information about background checks. Does your museum do background checks for education volunteers/docents? If so, what specifically does the background cover? Any information you can share is greatly appreciated.

As always, this is a wonderful resource, and I love the community here!

Sincerely,
