PART-TIME TEACHER

DESCRIPTION

Newseum teachers conduct classes and programs in a variety of settings for school groups, educators and the general public. Instructors are required to learn all Newseum curricula and adhere to company practices and procedures. Teachers also assist with program development.
Responsibilities, including but not limited to:
• Teach department-developed, education programs to visiting groups – students/adults/teachers – on-site in the classroom and exhibit space, as well as online.
• Work with the curriculum developer to create and update lesson plans for classes and professional development workshops.
• Assist with researching and writing content for publications and other Education Department resources.
• Assist with special events, such as open houses, family days and conferences, either on-site or off.
• Record class notes in a log, and assist with other data management.
• Maintain inventories and teaching equipment.
• Keep abreast of news events and developments in the journalism and education fields that directly affect department content.
• Assist with updating audiences on department and First Amendment news through social media.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum requirements for the position:
• Bachelor’s degree; a specialty in history, journalism or education is preferred.
• Experience in and/or knowledge of American history, the First Amendment and journalism.
• Experience developing lessons plans and activities for on-site and online audiences.
• Experience leading classes in a non-formal setting.
• Experience communicating with the public through a variety of social media platforms.
• Computer skills and ability to learn technology-based curriculum.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to pay careful attention to accuracy and bias free content.
• Must work enthusiastically, respectfully, and professionally with a wide variety of audiences and have a passion for helping people discover and explore history, the First Amendment and journalism.
• Energetic, outgoing and friendly.
• Organized, creative and flexible self-starter able to work as part of a team as well as independently.
• Ability to work some weekends, holidays and evenings.
