The Historical Society of Montgomery County is looking for a dynamic leader focused on outreach, promotion and development of the many aspects of this county's history.  Located in the suburban Philadelphia region, Montgomery County has a diverse history stretching from the early settlement and the founding of the country, to contributions in education, industry and the arts since then.


Established in 1881, HSMC maintains two sites - its headquarters at 1654 DeKalb St., Norristown, PA and Montgomery Cemetery, 1 Hartranft Ave, West Norriton, PA. At the headquarters, there is a research library, collections and archival storage, exhibit gallery, general meeting rooms, and offices.  The Society also owns and maintains Montgomery Cemetery as an historic place.  It was the first non-sectarian cemetery in the county, established in 1847.  It is the resting place of five Civil War generals, over 400 veterans, and approximately 6000 county citizens.  The first floor of the gatehouse at the cemetery is available as a meeting room for Cemetery activities; the second floor is an apartment held for rent.



The Position

The Executive Director is a full time position leading the organization, supervising staff, and develops programs, marketing & contacts with the community.  In addition to the Executive Director, currently the staff includes a part-time Curator, Archivist & Bookkeeper. The successful candidate should have at least 10 years senior leadership experience with an advanced degree in Museum Management, American History or other related fields.  Familiarity with PastPerfect and Quickbooks would be beneficial.



Responsibilities:
The Executive Director is the chief spokesperson and primary contact for the Society, providing leadership, outreach, and support to the staff, guidance to the Board of Trustees and vision for a new strategic plan; help formulate new ideas that will further enhance programmatic excellence; prepare a roadmap for fundraising initiatives and long range plans for continuing financial stability. The Executive Director is responsible to supervise and coordinate staff and volunteers, including task assignment and evaluation.

*        The Executive Director will engage in fundraising, and grant writing and its administration, seek external support from the public and develop relationships with the business community.

*        The Executive Director develops and implements programs, events and exhibits in conjunction with other staff, paid speakers/performers and volunteers, coordinates all activities, meetings and events relating to the Society.

*        The Executive Director publicizes and promotes the Society's mission and programs on and off site, serves as Editor of the newsletter, prepares promotional material including press releases, social media and web site updates.

*        The Executive Director utilizes sound judgment in regards to paper work, legalities and best practices which are inherent with the nature of a non-profit.

*        The Executive Director oversees the policies and procedures utilized for visitor service, collections management and exhibit preparation.

*        The Executive Director works with the President and Treasurer in preparation of an annual budget, Annual Report and general financial planning.  Further fiscal responsibilities can include approval of bills, and routine banking.

*        The Executive Director energizes and works with the Board of Trustees, Committees and chairpersons and serves as an ad hoc member of all committees pertaining to business of the society.

*        The Executive Director is responsible to keep the physical assets of the Society in good order such as building maintenance, system operations, and grounds keeping.

*        The Executive Director is responsible to see that supplies to keep the facilities and activities functioning are purchased in a timely manner.

*        The Executive Director chooses and purchases books and other items for re-sale at the Society.
