The National Sporting Library & Museum in Middleburg, Virginia, is seeking summer interns for the Curatorial, Education, and Library departments.

 

Internship Program

The NSLM Internship Program provides learning opportunities for students and recent graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in museums, libraries or archives. Interns work directly with staff on a variety of projects and gain hands-on experience with our Library and Museum collections and programming. Projects are assigned based on departmental needs, and the interns’ professional skills, interests and career goals.

 

Internship positions are unpaid. NSLM is willing to coordinate with academic programs for those students wishing to earn credit. Ideal candidates will be detail oriented undergraduate or graduate students (or recent graduate) with strong research, writing, and interpersonal skills. Candidates must be highly proficient with standard computer software, such as Word, Excel and Photoshop.

 

Summer term positions are available and scheduling is flexible. Summer term requires at least 16 hours per week. Please indicate schedule availability in application.

 

Available Positions

 

Curatorial Internship

The NSLM Curatorial Department is seeking interns to assist with permanent collection and exhibitions related projects. Interns will work directly with curatorial staff and have the opportunity to learn about collection management practices and gain hands on experience with collection management database software. Projects will include, but are not limited to:

·         assist with cataloging, research and care of the permanent collection of art

·         research individual works of art

·         assist with research and planning for upcoming exhibitions

·         develop material for educational programming

Coursework experience in Art History, Museum Studies or Arts Management preferred.

 

Education Department Internship

The NSLM Education Department is seeking interns to assist with all aspects of educational programming, to include: lectures, gallery talks, workshops and school tours. Interns will work directly with the Educational Programs Manager in developing and presenting programming. Some evening and weekend hours may be required as some programs are held outside of regular school and work hours. Projects will include, but are not limited to:

Coursework or experience in Museum Studies, Education, Community Outreach, or Special Events preferred.

 

Library Internship

The NSLM Library Department is seeking interns to assist with collections management, materials processing and archival collections projects. Interns will work directly with the Librarian and have the opportunity to learn about technical aspects of library collection development and technical services. Interns will gain hands on experience with integrated library systems software, MARC21 cataloging practices, and basic materials preservation work. Projects will include, but are not limited to:

·         preserve and repair library materials

·         update incomplete catalog records

·         generate call numbers within a unique subject-filing system

·         create finding aids for unprocessed archival collections

Coursework or experience in History, Art History, Museum Studies or Library Sciences preferred.
