SketchUp for Museums skill clinic (non-credit)
Hosted by the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science / museum studies specialization
Taught by Kent State SLIS alumna Emily O'Connor, M.L.I.S. '13, Environments Designer
This clinic will introduce participants to the tools and features of Google SketchUp Pro 8, exploring the variety of innovative techniques the program offers and how they can be used to communicate ideas and information in a visually striking manner. Participants will see examples of how the program has been used in the creation of real exhibitions, and will then have the opportunity to practice using the tools by creating a model of their own. Advanced features of the program, such as Google Earth and LayOut, will also be introduced.

Morning

i. Model Basics - modeling mindset, understanding the Toolkit

ii. Simple Model Walkthrough - practice using the Toolkit

iii. Modeling Buildings - drawing floors and walls, going from 2D to 3D, drawing doors and windows, stairs, and roof



Afternoon

i. Model Organization - grouping, components, layers

ii. Model Appearance - Importing jpegs, applying and using styles, using light and shadow

iii. Presenting a model - using scenes to create animation

iv. Printing and exporting

v. Brief intro to Google Earth, 3D Warehouse, LayOut
