You might want to look at this link from the National Park Service, which leads to a bibliography of books on archaeology for young readers, general audiences, and more detailed studies: http://www.nps.gov/history/archeology/public/archbook.htm.

I would also echo the recommendation to sell James Deetz's "In Small Things Forgotten." It's one of the best introductions to historical archaeology still in print.
