At the Chicago Zoological Society/Brookfield Zoo we have several levels of teacher development. We offer an on-going array of teacher classes for 1 and 3 graduate credits. The current listing can be found at www.czs.org/teacher-classes. The current list is through December. Our winter and spring classes will soon be listed. We also host a number of Professional Development days for the Chicago Public School System. These are typically held here at the Zoo but we have done individual PD in specific school buildings. Additionally, we are in partnership with Miami University in Ohio to offer the master's degree Advance Inquiry Program. This is an MA or MAT in biology. ( www.czs.org/aip<http://www.czs.org/aip> ). The face-to-face component is held here at the Zoo with semester work being online. We do not take any of these programs state wide. Marketing for our Master's program is more extensive than that for our teacher classes. For the AIP program we have email blast, a featured event on our website and social media especially during registration, flyers sent to school districts, attendance at conferences, and word of mouth. Our teacher programs are marketed mainly via word of mouth and our website. We feel very successful in all of these programs. Our upcoming Aug. 26 PD day for Chicago Public Schools has 90+ teachers coming. Our summer teacher classes have between 25 - 30 participants and fall-winter classes have between 12 - 15 participants. This is our 5th year for our Master's program and each cohort averages 30+/- participants. I would be pleased to talk with you about any of our programs. Just give me a call anytime. We are looking at starting a teacher ambassador/professional development group, and are curious what other museums might be offering. Also, since we are located in IL, certain changes in how a teacher receives continuing education credits have made it seem as if museums are no longer accredited to be offering these. Anyone else in IL dealing with these changes in how they offer professional development to teachers? I'm looking for more than field trips and standard educational programming-even more than teacher workshops-programs very specifically identified as "PD" for teachers. Do you have a marketing plan? Do you run your program at your site or actually go to schools on PD days? Do you work only in your local area or do you have a state-wide approach? What kind of evaluations and benchmarking do you do? Thanks for any information you can share! --Dani --To identify, preserve, interpret, and promote the heritage of North Dakota and its people.
