ASSOCIATE CURATOR FOR CONTEMPORARY ART & ARCHITECTURE

The National Academy is a lively community of artists, architects, educators, students, museum-goers, and those dedicated to the arts in America.  The National Academy Museum’s permanent collection of over 7,000 works captures the variety and vitality of American art since the early 19th century due to the vision of the Academicians who present their work upon induction to the Academy. The Academy School offers studio-based study in an intimate environment under the mentorship of working faculty artists.

In addition, the Associate Curator is the programmatic point person and contact for the Academicians and facilitates their participation in the life of the Academy by developing a comprehensive knowledge of their work and accomplishments, and including them in lectures, panel discussions and workshops. Working with the Curator of 19th and early 20th Century Art, the Associate Curator oversees the docent program and serves as Project Manager for the Academy’s Annual Induction Ceremony. This position works closely with the Registrar and Chief Conservator on all exhibitions, loans and care of the collection.  In concert with the curatorial team, the Associate Curator will prepare, track and adhere to departmental budgets.

We strongly seek candidates who bring an expertise in utilizing a collaborative and integrative approach to exhibitions and program planning.  The ideal candidate will have at least 3-5 years’ experience as an assistant or associate curator with a track record of developing and producing contemporary art and architecture exhibitions and attendant public programs.  MA required; PhD preferred.  Ability to foster relationships with artists, architects and donors is essential as is a positive, proactive and collegial work ethic.  Excellent written and oral communication and time management skills are required.  Proficiency in MS programs and The Museum System (TMS) is necessary.  Competitive salary and excellent benefits.
