As the educator for the university museum, I have been involved in PD for teachers through our area Region 17 Educational Service Center.
Primarily, I have done workshops for teachers at all levels, who teach diverse subjects. The emphasis of the workshops that I have presented have been in my area of expertise, which is art; I try to include activities that have been successfully used at the museum with our visitors.

Additionally, from these workshops at the Service Center (that serves 17 counties), I was invited to present a workshop on including topics/activities about diversity,  and this was an event that was held at an area school just for the staff and teachers of that school. (I shared projects and activities that we have done at our annual Day of the Dead Festivals, as an example of one approach....)

Working with the Service Center has also made it possible to make outreach visits to outlying schools, and that has helped to make the Museum known to other schools and audiences.

The relationship with the Service Center has been very positive, and I have been invited to do several presentations each year for five years. While the workshops that I do may not be exactly what you are looking for, perhaps the idea of working with/through an educational service center will be of interest or help.

And, I, too, would be interested in hearing what others are doing.

I would be interested in hearing about this as well. We are looking at starting a teacher ambassador/professional development group, and are curious what other museums might be offering. Also, since we are located in IL, certain changes in how a teacher receives continuing education credits have made it seem as if museums are no longer accredited to be offering these. Anyone else in IL dealing with these changes in how they offer professional development to teachers?

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Professional Development for teachers

Good afternoon,

I am looking to connect with anyone who has developed any professional development programs for teachers and is willing to share their experiences.  I’m looking for more than field trips and standard educational programming—even more than teacher workshops—programs very specifically identified as “PD” for teachers.  Do you have a marketing plan?  Do you run your program at your site or actually go to schools on PD days?  Do  you work only in your local area or do you have a state-wide approach?  What kind of evaluations and benchmarking do you do?

Thanks for any information you can share!
