Rock County Historical Society (located in Janesville, Wisconsin) is currently looking for a part-time interpreter whose main task will be presenting a variety of historic house tours at the Lincoln-Tallman House, using both first- and third-person presentations. RCHS Campus Interpreter

 

The Rock County Historical Society (RCHS) was founded in 1948 to preserve and interpret Rock County history and is Rock County’s premier resource for historical research, thought-provoking programming, and one-of-a-kind historic sites located in Janesville, Wisconsin. Since its inception, the RCHS has had a long standing relationship with the City of Janesville to manage and operate the Lincoln-Tallman grounds, a 3.25 acre site. At its center is the Lincoln-Tallman house, an Italianate-style mansion that was constructed (1855-1857) and occupied by William Morrison Tallman, a lawyer and abolitionist. The residence has the honor of being a site where Abraham Lincoln stayed overnight in October of 1859 prior to his election as US President.

 

Job Description: Campus Interpreters provide educational and engaging tours of the Lincoln-Tallman House and other RCHS sites, as well as providing guests with exceptional service.

Part time/seasonal: 10-25 hours per week, weekdays & weekends, June - December

Training: One on one and group training throughout the year (paid).

 

Applicant must be 18 years of age and may have a background check. Previous experience preferred.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·         provide tours to school groups and general visitors in both 3rd and 1st person (costumed) interpretation.

·         interpret Victorian architecture, lifestyle, and historic events to visitors in an engaging and professional manner.

·         conduct small-scale research to supplement and support the 1st person interpretation.

·         work with and monitor historic objects with care to aid in their preservation.

·         work the front desk greeting guests and handling tour ticket purchasing.

·         interacting with guests upon their arrival and as they move around the grounds.

·         taking care of assigned costumes and providing costume additions such as period sensitive shoes and time pieces.

·         conduct small maintenance and cleaning tasks for the upkeep of the historic buildings.


The Campus Interpreters reports to the Operations Manager. Tours will be reviewed and evaluated throughout the year in order to maintain historical accuracy.

 

Qualifications:

·         Enthusiasm for history and talking with the public.

·         Willingness to assist with program set up and clean up.

·         Ability to attend required trainings.

·         Willingness to try and learn new experiences and activities.

·         Must be willing to work a flexible schedule and weekends.

·         Prior museum interpretive experience helpful.

·         Able to stand/walk for long periods inside and outside, and in a variety of conditions.

·         Able to work creatively and effectively as a team and contribute ideas and knowledge to ongoing and newly introduced 

       programs/tours.
