Hi all, We're a city-owned & operated museum - part of the recreation department, no board of directors. We do have a collections policy, but not a committee. Does anyone know of any examples of municipally owned museums with a collections committee? Or ideas for how that would be structured? It always has worked well for us. Chester County Historical Society has had a Collections Committee for many years. It encompasses the museum, library and photo archives. There are obviously professional standards that differ between the archival management and museum collections management. However, the collections are very interconnected and the overarching mission is something to which everyone adheres, especially in terms of acquisition, loans and deaccessions (there are differences in the latter). We also include all three areas in one Collections Management Policy. It incorporates all of the distinctions within each collection so that each can meet the professional standards that apply while also reflecting the mission as a cohesive unit. Hope this helps.
