The Southern Oregon Historical Society is hiring an experienced registrar for its collections department. The registrar maintains and produces collection records, facilitates access to the collections for the public and staff and works closely with the curator and library manager. This a part-time, non-exempt position at 20 – 30 hours per week. The pay rate is $15 per hour.

SOHS’s collection is an estimated 1,000,000 three-dimensional and archival items that document human settlement in the seven county region of Southern Oregon. Our artifacts include tools and baskets made by the Native American tribes who lived in the region, quilts brought here in covered wagons by pioneers who traveled on the Oregon Trail, and items that reflect contemporary life. Our archives include thousands of photos of Southern Oregon, plus diaries, business records, journals, hundreds of maps and architectural drawings, and over 1000 oral histories.

The Duties and responsibilities of the registrar include:
·         Executing required legal records by acquiring title transfer, accessioning and deaccessioning collections artifacts
·         Maintaining Collections Records including accession, deaccession, incoming and outgoing loan forms
·         Providing Collections Access by responding to the public and staff requests and inquires and by cataloging the collections
·         Assisting in the Care of Collections by assisting with the storage, exhibition, proper handling and conservation of collections and by maintaining an up-to-date Procedures Manual of all tasks performed by the Registrar
·         Empowering volunteers by preparing instructions, assembling training materials, and reviewing tasks completed

The qualifications for the position include:
·         A degree in history, museum studies or related field
·         Two years museum experience with at least one year in a registrar or curatorial position
·         Familiarity with museum registrar procedures and operations
·         Familiarity with collections management software – SOHS uses PastPerfect
·         Ability to lift and carry 30lbs. and climb stairs
·         Ability to work well with the public and fellow staff
