I’ll pipe in on behalf of interpretive planners who haven’t worked on stand-alone visible storage projects, but who love connecting people to objects and their “keepers.”

Any such planner would begin by asking you about your visitors’ interests, needs, and expectations (both onsite and virtual); what the impact you hope to have on visitors, your community, and your institution (outcomes); what you and your visitors consider special about your collections (ISO “So what?); if you’re open to testing and evaluation; the size and scope of the project (collections, budget, timeline), among other things. Any such planner will help tease out the “why” before helping you and your team come up with “how” it all might happen.

The possibilities for object-centered interpretation may not be endless, but they sure have grown over the past decade — as has public interest. It’s a great time to be doing this work, Dan.

Best,

Dean

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Interpretive Plan for Visible Storage

Any one out there completed one recently they would be willing to share? Can anyone recommended an interpretive planner in North America that has experience with visible storage?

Thanks,

Dan
