Position opening:                           Curator of Collections and Exhibits

Position qualifications: 

The ideal candidate will possess, or develop, a passion for Sitka’s history while demonstrating skills in all aspects of museum operation.  An undergraduate degree in history, anthropology, American studies or related field is required.

 

Preferred:

·        Degree with training in Curatorial Studies and/or Museum Studies programs

·        Experience working in a historical society or museum environment

·        Experience in archival management, cataloging, records management or museum registration

·        Strong written and oral communication skills

·        Ability to interact and engage with the public

·        Technology skills related to collections management (Past Perfect) and web page management

 

Licenses and Certifications:

·        Valid Alaska driver’s license or ability to attain one after hire

·        Ability to pass criminal background checks (required prior to final hire)

 

Salary:  Yearly contract $41,600 to $43,700 depending on experience

 

Benefits:

·        Paid leave (combined sick/vacation):  Accrues at 160 hours per year

·        Paid holidays

·        Cafeteria Style benefits plan (Flexible Benefits):  This is an employee benefit plan offered pursuant to Section 125 of the IRS Code.  The plan is currently limited at SHS, Inc. but does provide an additional 20% times the salary that can be taken as cash to assist the employee in securing his/her health insurance, IRA, etc.

·        Furnished housing may be available at SHS, Inc. facilities and below market rates (no pets)

Synopsis of some of the SHS, Inc. curator’s duties:

 

·        Work with SHS, Inc. staff to design and care for exhibits, both permanent and rotating exhibits

·        Promote outreach programs that engage different segments of the Sitka community, as well as, visitors

·        Catalogue, research and document SHS, Inc.’s collections using Past Perfect

·        Coordinate movement of collections, including new acquisitions and loans

·        Maintain artifact storage and record keeping

·        Respond to research requests

·        Manage SHS, Inc. web site and Facebook account

·        Serve on committees as necessary, i.e. offer guidance for museum expansion

 


About the Sitka Historical Society & Museum and the Sitka Community

 

The Sitka Historical Society, Inc. is in its 57th year of existence, with its Museum now in its 47th year.  The Society and Museum are a small 501(c)3 non-profit funded primarily by yearly allocations from the City & Borough of Sitka, visitor admissions, memberships, giving, fund-raising and museum store profits.  The Museum is housed in the City-owned Centennial Hall with additional storage and workspace off site.  The Society is now engaged with the City in a major building expansion which includes the construction of a new museum within the Centennial Hall complex.

 

Sitka, population 9,000, is located in Southeast Alaska on Baranof Island which lies within the Tongass National Forest.  Sitka has a moderate maritime climate.  Its history, culture, environment and community spirit are demonstrated by extensive volunteerism, youth support, numerous non-profits, a vibrant arts community, and excellent education facilities.  Sitka is widely known as one of the most desirable locations in all of Alaska.
