No Rules: Fashion without Boundaries

Newport, Rhode Island was historically a sportingarena for America's high society, and a place governed by strict socialcodes.  But not everyone agreed to play by the rules.  Join us for "No Rules: Fashion withoutBoundaries", a symposium exploring fashion designers and connoisseurs whorefused to be constrained by social boundaries. This event is cosponsored bythe Costume Society of America Northeastern Region, Newport RestorationFoundation and International Tennis Hall ofFame & Museum. This symposium will feature scholarly lectures on a variety offashion-related topics, as well as curator-led tours of the Ted Tinlingcollection at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and the Rough Point DorisDuke fashion exhibit.  Symposium attendees will be the first to viewthis extraordinary exhibit. 


The cost of registration is $60.00for Costume Society Members, $70.00 for nonmembers, $35.00 for Costume SocietyStudent Members. 9:45 a.m.      Sportswear: The Clothing of the 20thCentury.

                     PatriciaCampbell Warner, Professor Emeritus, University of Massachusetts

Pat will discuss of the impactof sportswear on 20th century clothing.

 

10:15 a.m.    Fancy Pants: Ted Tinling the Tennis Couturier

                     NicoleMarkham, Curator of Collections, ITHF&M

                     TedTinling played an integral role in the sport of tennis, especially inhighlighting the women’s game, from the 1920s through the 1980s. Nicole willgive an overview of Ted Tinling’s career, as both tennis personality and notedfashion designer.

10:45 a.m.    Curator led behind-the-scenes look at theTed Tinling Collection and guided tour of the exhibit.  

11:45 -1:00 p.m. Lunch in the US Tennis Association Wing

                       Theexhibit looks at the clothing and personal style of Doris Duke from the 1940sto the 1990s with pieces ranging from couture evening gowns to sportswear.

2:00 p.m.        No Rules: The Personal Style of Doris Duke

                       KristenCosta, Assistant Curator, NRF

                       Kristenwill discuss the eclectic clothing collection of Doris Duke and how Duke’spersonal interests in design and art influenced her clothing selections.

 

2:30 p.m.       Trend-ology:Fashion Trends from Tartan to Unisex

                       Ariele Elia, AssistantCurator of Costume and Textiles, The Museum at FIT

                       A look at the diverse sources from whichtrends have emerged over the past 250 years, based on the current exhibition Trend-ology atthe Museum at FIT

3:00 p.m.        ClosingRemarks

Symposium attendeeswill be given a pass to return to the International Tennis Hall of Fame &Museum anytime
