Hi Mary,

If the rifle is old, unique or special in some way, why don't you have a
furniture or wooden object conservator have a look at it before you
experiment with chemical strippers or abrasives? I know this could be
expensive, but you might get at least an opinion for reasonable cost. If
you can't afford doing the work right away, you might consider exhibiting
the rifle with the paint stain as it is (part of the history of the object)
until you can commission extra help. Inexpert paint removal is tricky
business, especially if you want to maintain the integrity of the original
material and finish underneath.
