Summer Graduate Intern

Cataloging and Inventory Assistant

 

Do you want to work with museum collections? If so, this is the internship for you. The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated intern to work with the Museum Collections and Exhibitions team on a cataloging and inventory project.

 

This internship is open to graduate students interested in collections experience in a museum setting. The intern will gain broad hands-on experience in object handling, inventory, cataloging artifact collections, condition reporting, and photography of

museum collections.

 

The intern will participate in a cataloging project to catalog, photograph and conduct condition reports for artifacts in the KHS collections. The intern will also participate in an inventory project that is part of an ongoing wall to wall inventory of the KHS museum collections. The artifacts in the KHS collection include art, furniture, textiles, armament, tools and more so the intern will get experience working with a variety of artifact types.

 

The internship is available for those interested in class credit and those just seeking more experience in the museum field. The internship is 200 hours. The exact timeframe and schedule will be mutually determined by the supervisor and the successful

candidate.

 

Minimum requirements: Must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate level program working towards a degree in museum studies, public history, history, costume studies or other related field. The candidate must have strong research and

organization skills. Basic knowledge of handling of museum objects and archival materials is preferred.

 

This is a temporary position, with $2000 stipend, based in Frankfort, Ky. Employee benefits are

not available. Housing is not provided.

Project Assistant, Churchill Weavers Collection

Museum Collections & Exhibitions Graduate Internship

The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) seeks an enthusiastic and self-motivated intern to assist

with publicizing and promoting the Churchill Weavers collection, a fabric archive of over 25,000

20th century hand-woven textiles. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a KHS signature

acquisition and gain valuable experience in the areas of writing for social media, developing and

implementing outreach activities, and digitizing and marketing museum collections. The intern

will work closely with the Project Coordinator, Assistant Project Specialist, and volunteers. The

intern will also have the opportunity to participate in collections management focused training

sessions lead by Museum Collections and Exhibitions staff.

Responsibilities may include:

·         Creating and administering content for KHS blog, Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter

·         Researching, developing, and implementing strategies to reach and engage target audiences

·         Writing content for print and electronic promotional and educational materials

·         Coordinating images for use in advertising and marketing the collection

·         Participating in the development of a online exhibition project

·         Cataloging and digitizing the fabric archive and related weaving records

·         Attending staff meetings and collections training sessions

Qualifications:

·         Must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate level program working towards a degree in history, humanities, museum studies, museum education, communications, marketing, or a related field.

·         Strong writing, research, organization, interpersonal, and computer skills

·         Strong interests in textiles and textile history

·         Experience working in a team environment
