I've been a reviewer for preservation and conservation grants for years and have found it to be an excellent tutorial on what makes a well-written grant and what doesn't. The grant agencies can be very helpful to applicants, so don't hesitate to ask. And the prime thing is to take the criteria very seriously. Bu

Tracy Ann,
I am in the same position! I'm also interested in learning more about how to write grant requests but am not in a professional position with my own projects. There are some grant writing workshops coming up in my area but they seem to be geared to current museum professionals with specific projects and grants. Should I be thinking about attending these programs? Another question: is it a big no-no to ask for copies of successful grant requests from mentors or current volunteer supervisors? Some of my current mentors are very active grant writers (including BLM and government grants) and I don't want to step on toes. Is this request acceptable or a major faux pas?
Thanks for any input, and I appreciate the advice given in earlier responses on this thread.

You may want to start with the Foundation Center's website and check out what they have to offer in training. As Marc says, targeting the grant application is the most important thing you can do,and it can take some practice in learning how to do it.

The Foundation Center's page that may be of most use to you right now is here:

If you belong to a state museum association, they may have workshops on the subject that will help you, and I believe AASLH and AAM do as well, though not every year.

Hope this helps.
