Sara,

We’ve “borrowed” from attractions like Disney and Dollywood and posted a sign at the entrance stating “Please be aware that filming and still photography may be in progress on the premise.  Your image may be used for publicity of the Museum.”

With that in mind, if someone ask us not to take photos of them, we respect their right and we often make an informal ask before taking photos.  We have also staged filming and photo sessions for which we have used waivers.

We have also found that many schools already ask for media waivers for their students and the schools view that as “transferable” with their visit to the museum.  Thus allowing us to have TV or newspaper interview students about a visiting the museum.

It has been discussed that should someone ask for their photo or their child’s photo to be taken down from whatever media it was published we would do our best to make it happen as soon as we could.

I hope that helps,

Ken

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Using event photos for promotional purposes

For those of you who use facebook or your institution's website to promote your educational programming - do you include photographs of minors?  If so, do you work with parents/teachers to get permission?  Our museum is interested in using photos of children touring our museum as well as participating in activities.  One solution that we discussed was cropping out the faces, but that's not always a good solution.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Sara Summers-Luedtke
