Call for Papers Collectors at Music Museums – reasons & means. CIMCIM Meeting August 23 to 31, 2014 Music & Theatre Museum, The Nydahl Collecton, Sibelius Museum, The Danish Music Museum (National Museum of Denmark), Rockheim, Ringve Music Museum Stockholm | Turku | Copenhagen | Trondheim Proposals due by 20. January, 2014 The network for Nordic Music Museums will host the annual conference of the International Committee of Musical Instrument Museums and Collections (CIMCIM) to be held in Stockholm (Sweden), Turku (Finland), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Trondheim (Norway) from August 23 through August 31 2014. The core of the museum is the collections. But how are they compiled? And in what way will museums collect musical instruments, music and related objects in the future? Are we prepared to change our ways of collecting in accordance with changes in society (globalization, economical and ecological changes etc)? And has the entrance of popular music as a museum field changed our ways of collecting? How do we relate immaterial heritage to collecting? We welcome proposals for papers and lecture-demonstrations presenting perspectives on any of the following topics: · The historical collector as pioneer: reasons, means, and background for collecting – From private to public collections · Do we need more square pianos in the collection? – Museum collections at the beginning of the 21st century · Popular music in music museums – Collecting and/or creating the popular · Recording museum musical instruments - Sound collections and the collecting of sound A panel session will focus on accessibility to the collection: Museums as instigators – Museums as educators? Contributions are welcomed. There will be a number of sessions dedicated to free papers. We invite proposals relevant to the field of musical instrument museums, e.g. presentation of ongoing projects and recent or planned exhibitions. Proposals should be in English (c. 500 words), clearly describing the topic, including the following: Abstract (background, research questions, aims and significance)Name, postal and email addresses, and institutional affiliation of proposerType of submission (paper topic, panel session, free paper) Paper presentations will be 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Panel session (6-8 contributors) 10 minutes presentation followed by discussion. The language will be English. All presenters must register for the conference and they must be ICOM-members or CIMCIM-subscribers (se http://network.icom.museum/cimcim/membership/how-to-join-cimcim/ ).
