Job Title:        Executive Director
Supervisor:    Fresno Historical Society Board of Directors

Job Summary

The Executive Director of Fresno Historical Society is responsible for leading, directing, managing, fundraising, and developing strategic direction that will achieve goals and objectives for the organization. The Executive Director has authority and responsibility, as delegated by the Board of Directors, to carry out the functions of the corporation.  All authority for implementing corporate decisions flows through this position.  The Executive Director is the primary spokesperson for the Fresno Historical Society.

The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors, especially its President and committees, in developing and implementing organizational plans and policy decisions.

Nature and Scope of Responsibilities

The Executive Director, with the support of the Operations Manager, directs all programs and activities of the organization as delegated by the Board and President.

  • Provides leadership to communicate and achieve the vision and mission of Fresno Historical Society.

  • Develops, for approval by the Board of Directors, long-range goals, strategic plans, and success factors necessary to
     implement the mission, vision, and organizational goals of the Fresno Historical Society.

  • Creates a strategic funding plan for the organization.

  • Establishes fundraising programs and maintains relationships with funding sources.

  • Researches, secures and manages grants.

  • Recommends programs, plans, and policies for the effective development of annual and major gifts and endowment 
     bequests.

  • Establishes goals and priorities based on the current and future needs of the organization and associated outreach
     programs. 

  • Institutes and administers marketing and public relations plans with support from the External Affairs Committee and
     staff.

  • Serves as the primary liaison and provides information necessary to the Board of Directors to assist them in making 
    appropriate decisions for the corporation.

  • Develops and implements a continuous quality improvement process and reports outcomes to the Board of Directors 
     on a regular basis.

  • Reviews, with the Internal Affairs Committee and outside accounting firm, all capital and operating budgets, new 
     program budgets, and contracts for programs and support services prior to obtaining Board approval.

  • Monitors compliance with approved budgets.  Monitors and reports fiscal performance, budget variances, and the 
     organizational fiscal condition to the Board of Directors on a regular basis.

  • Hires, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines as necessary direct report employees, in cooperation with the Internal 
    Affairs Committee and appropriate supervisory staff.

  • Provides positive motivation to staff.

  • Assures that all programmatic operations are evaluated by measurable performance standards and goals.

  • Provides employees with job descriptions, including position requirements, responsibilities, and job performance 
    criteria.

  • Ensures that all employees are evaluated on a regular basis, with interim evaluations as necessary.

  • Evaluates and realigns program administrative structure as necessary.


Human Resources:
The Executive Director and Operations Manager are responsible to assure that qualified staff are selected and trained on all programs of the organization.  They are also responsible to assure that a program for staff development and retention is in place.  The Executive Director and the Operations Manager supervise staff, consultants, volunteers, and others, as may be appropriate within the approved organizational chart.

Finance:
The Executive Director and Operations Manager are responsible for determining present and future operating and capital requirements for the Fresno Historical Society.  This involves developing, reviewing, and recommending operating budgets for Board approval, as well as developing contingency plans when significant variances from approved budgets are forecast.

Fundraising:
The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of the fundraising for the Fresno Historical Society, including developing and implementing a fundraising strategy designed to maintain current programs and address changing needs.
  • Determines annual goals and objectives for all development functions.

  • Oversees and reports results.

  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with members of the Board of Directors, engaging their involvement
     with the advocacy of development programs.

  • Designs and implements major donor campaigns for the organization.

  • Identifies potential major donors and implements plans for their cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

  • Maintains, updates, and oversees the execution of an annual giving campaign.

  • Supervises a continued effort to secure gifts from estates and living trusts.

  • Provides for accurate and up-to-date record keeping of all donors and donations.

  • Identifies, recruits, and ensures appropriate management of volunteers to support events and activities.

Character

The Executive Director is the chief advocate for the mission, principles, and values of the Fresno Historical Society.

Job Qualifications

1.  BS/BA degree in Management, Administration, or related field.

2.  Minimum of five years of progressively responsible management experience.

3.  Demonstrated success in:

      • Managing a non-profit organization

      • Raising funds from a variety of sources

      • Forming and guiding collaborative endeavors

      • Planning for both long term and short term program and organizational development

4.	An engaging personality capable of interacting with a broad range of individuals, as well as social and personality traits conducive to effective representation of the organization are required.

5.  Strong leadership skills are required.
