Beverly,
We would only be guessing as to why these non-profits would do without a budget. It seems like the thing to do would be to ask them directly. They may all have the same reason, or they could have different reasons. We still don't know if these are museums, or arts and cultural organizations with a public mission, or what their purpose is.

I am pretty sure that most museum professionals would agree that adopting a budget is standard good practice.

Jerry,
Several small non-profits (not to be named) do not use budgets. I wondered why they operate this way, if there was a benefit to them to not develop a budget.

Hi Beverly,

There have been many responses from those of us for whom it is “obvious” that non-profits should prepare budgets. However, “where there is smoke there is fire” and I am still not quite clear from your response to Jim as to why you are asking the question ;)? For example: has a non-profit you are associated with suggested that a budget is NOT necessary….and you are testing the water? Has anyone expressed reasons (to you) for not doing a budget?

I guess where I am going with this, is that we can spend all week listing the “positives” for budgets: let’s consider the “negatives” which is (hopefully!) a shorter list.

I am an Accountant/Auditor so am intrigued by this one!

Best Wishes,

Jerry

A number of non-profits, that I am aware of, have operated for very long periods of time without developing a budget.

I'm really curious -- why are you asking this question?

Are there reasons that a non-profit would avoid developing a budget?
