The American Red Cross is seeking a Historical Programs and Collections Associate. This position is in the corporate archives for the American Red Cross and reports to the archivist.

Job Description Summary:

 

The Historical Programs and Collections Associate provides support to the Archivist/Manager of Historical Programs and Collections. This position assists with reference and access, public programming, collection management, and preservation. This role includes implementing exhibits, coordinating tours of the 17th street building, and recruiting and training volunteers for the tour and collection management programs. This Associate position serves as a liaison with internal and external clients for the Red Cross historical program.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

·         Provides support for historical programs and collections, which includes reference and access, public programming, security, and preservation.

·         Researches collections in response to requests from publishers, professional researchers and the general public.

·         Coordinates, recruits, and trains volunteers and interns for tours and collections management.

·         Schedules volunteers for tours and conducts regular and specialized tours.

·         Maintains tour schedule and updates the script.

·         Assists in collection management including cataloging, arrangement and description, storage maintenance, physical handling and preservation.

·         Provides support in building the historical photograph section of the photo library database.

·         Participates in developing exhibits, publications, and outreach programming, including social media (blogs, Pinterest, Facebook, etc.) as well as fund raising and grant proposals.

·         Represents the Red Cross historical program for paid and volunteer staff, public groups and other historical venues.

 

Qualifications:

 

·         A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) with a minimum 3 years of relevant experience, Masters degree in Public History, Museum Studies, or Library Science preferred.

·         Excellent written and oral communication skills--ability to prepare effective reports and presentations.

·         Demonstrated excellent customer service capabilities.

·         Ability to work effectively with a range of staff and internal/external stakeholders.

·         Operational flexibility to meet sudden and unpredictable business needs.

·         Expert knowledge of Past Perfect museum collection software and use of Microsoft Office applications (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.) Experience with Cumulus photo database is a bonus.

·         Background in or knowledge of standard museum and archives best practices, policy, and or related field is preferred.
