Dear INTERCOM colleagues It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the international book launch of ‘Museums and Public Value: creating sustainable futures’ on Tuesday, 13th August at 12:30 p.m.. The launch will be held in the Museum Trade Fair Amphitheater at the ICOM Rio 2013 Triennial. The theme of the conference, Museums (memory +creativity)= social change establishes a vision for the work of museums. ‘Museums and Public Value’ provides a structural approach to achieve this vision. The concept editor, Carol Scott, invited distinguished museum professionals, academics and thinkers from the UK, US, NZ and Australia to contribute to the book. From the UK, Sharon Heal (Museums Association), David O’Brien (City University London), Joanne Orr (Museums and Galleries Scotland) and David Spence, Tom Wareham and Annette Day (Museum of London) with Caroline Bressy (UCL) and June Bam-Hutchison (York and Kingston Universities) have taken the pulse on policy issues and co-producing with the public. American authors Ben Garcia (UCLA), Marsha Semmel (IMLS), Mark Weinberg and Kate Leeman (University of Ohio), Randi Korn (Randi Korn Associates) and Mary Ellen Munley (The Museum Group) address the roles of intentional planning, evaluation, management and education in creating public value. Mike Houlihan (Te Papa, New Zealand) describes how value has informed every aspect of Te Papa’s planning path and Lisa Conolly (ABS, Australia) explores how governments measure value. I look forward to welcoming you next Tuesday in Rio.
