All,

The Virginia Historical Society is currently gauging whether venues would be interested in hosting a traveling exhibition of 40-60 original watercolor maps and drawings related to the American Civil War by Union soldier, cartographer, and Confederate prisoner of war Robert Knox Sneden. The entire Sneden collection, a 5,000-page memoir and 1,000 watercolors, represents perhaps one of the largest collections of Civil War soldier art ever produced, and many of the images are the only known depictions of lesser-known locations and events.  Eye of the Storm: Civil War Drawings of Robert Knox Sneden would be available in four month rental periods from May 2014 through April 2016.

This collection was the basis of the best-selling books Eye of the Storm: A Civil War Odyssey (Free Press, 2000) and Images from the Storm (Free Press, 2001). More information about the collection can be found in the Guide to the Robert Knox Sneden Diary, 1861–1865 at http://www.vahistorical.org/arvfind/snedenillist.htm.

This exhibition will be made available only if the VHS receives enough interest from potential venues. If you think your museum would be interested in hosting the exhibition, please contact Rebecca A. Rose, Registrar, at [log in to unmask]  by September 15, 2013.

Looking forward to the possibility of working with you.
