Learning Theory and Museum Education Practice

This presentation provides a brief history of learning theories and demonstrates how those theories play out in classroom and museum settings. A learning theory is composed of two parts- a theory of knowledge and a theory of learning. This presentation provides some basic definitions and provides time for discussion and questions. Other topics in this presentation include: Multiple Intelligences, Bloom’s Taxonomy, Informal vs. Formal Learning, and Family Learning. How Inquiry-Based and 21st Century Learning Styles Are Affecting Museum Programming

This presentation will focus on how museums are developing school programming around 21st century skill techniques such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. It will identify strategies to meet these growing trends in formal and informal education programs and demonstrate how inquiry-based learning is fueling the push toward the development of 21st century skills and thinking. The presenter for this webinar is Mike Deetsch, Assistant Director of Education, Toledo Museum of Art.

Common Core for Museum Professionals

This webinar with give an overview of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in the English Language Arts and Math, including how they were developed and how they fit into the greater discussion of standards-based education. The presentation will examine how each set of CCSS is structured and then provide some strategies for designing new museum programs and activities that are aligned to the CCSS and reverse engineer existing programs and activities for alignment. Finally, it will outline some key benefits to the CCSS like the encouragement of interdisciplinary instruction.
