Museum Education Internship at Tusculum College

 

Purpose: To supplement the educational programming and general mission of the Museums of Tusculum while providing a meaningful learning and professional development opportunity to a qualified graduate student from an accredited college or university.

 

In the summer of 2013, we are offering a 10-12 week (typically, May-July) internship to a qualified graduate student currently pursuing a Master’s degree in a course of study related to museums, archives, cultural site management, non-profit management or public history. Tusculum College will provide housing for the duration of the internship.

 

Project Proposed for 2013:  The intern will spend the majority of his/her time at the Doak House Museum as primary leader for the museum’s summer history camp. In addition to running the week-long day camp, the intern will assist an instructor with a 4 day art camp. Both camps will be held in June. In July, the intern will have primary responsibility for designing and pre-planning a fall “harvest day” event to be offered to school groups in August or September. Finally, the intern will spearhead late summer marketing and survey efforts to area school groups in order to boost field trip group numbers for 2013-2014. Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to, conducting tours of the Doak House Museum, assisting staff at the President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library with educational outreach efforts, and presenting a report to museum staff at the conclusion of the internship.

 

Must be able to work in conditions with no air conditioning, walk reasonable distances, to navigate stairs, and lift 30 lbs. Subject to background check. Work hours are typically M-F from 9 am to 5 pm with some evenings and weekends.

 

Intern will report to Dollie Boyd, Director of the Museums of Tusculum.   

 

Application Process: The internship is open to students currently enrolled at an accredited college or university, pursuing a Master’s degree in a course of study related to museums, archives, cultural site management, non-profit management or public history.
