Emma,

I was in NYC the end of January and on my free day went to three sites: the 9/11 Memorial, the Museum of Jewish Heritage (in the neighborhood of the 9/11 Memorial, at the tip of Manhattan), and the American Folk Art Museum to see the William Matthew Prior exhibit.

The 9/11 Memorial was very moving--I ended up spending a lot of time there. You need to get a ticket in advance to get on to the site, especially now, as the weather gets warmer and school vacations and tour groups start coming again. You can get them at no charge via the Internet (http://www.911memorial.org/). For someone like me, who loves folk art, the William Matthew Prior exhibit was great.

For living history, you'll probably have to go to Staten Island, to Historic Richmondtown (http://www.historicrichmondtown.org/).

For help in navigating the transportation system, check out http://www.mta.info/ for the details.

Hope this helps--and have a great trip!
