Black Hills Mining Museum Business Manager

The Black Hills Mining Museum is located in Lead, South Dakota, and is dedicated to the education of the public to the rich heritage of mining in the Black Hills.  The museum is open to the public for tours of the simulated underground mine along with general viewing of historical displays.  The Black Hills Mining Museum is looking for a business manager to manage all phases of the operation.  The primary focus of the manager will be to manage the day to day business operation of the site.  The business activities including scheduling, bookkeeping, marketing, ordering inventory, managing temporary summer help, managing tours, maintaining the museum, and other general managing activities.  This position will report directly to the Mining Museum Board.

Compensation dependent on experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Plans and manages the business operations of the Black Hills Mining Museum.

·         Supervises daily operation of a gift shop; meets, greets and assists public in selecting gifts and other merchandise; supervises staff also engaged in service to the public, selling, and assisting buyers.

·         Supervises cashiering and receipting the sale of merchandise by cash and charge transactions and performs such duties as required; maintains sales records and makes daily reports.

·         Serves as buyer, meeting with vendors and product representatives to select marketable goods and gifts appropriate to the potential buying audience, season of the year and recognized customer demand.

·         Prepares budgets and performs bookkeeping duties including payments of payroll, bills, and invoices and submittal of required tax forms.

·         Screens, interviews and recommends applicants for temporary positions under direct supervision.

·         Prioritizes and assigns, monitors and controls the work of the museum staff. Selects and recommends staff training, supervises, reviews and conducts training.

·         Reviews the work of the personnel and is responsible for counseling and discipline.

·         Supervises the development and construction of museum exhibits and educational programming.

·         Grant Writing.

·         Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Essential Skills:

·         Knowledge of the principles and practices of business management, required.

·         Supervisory experience, required

·         Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices, required.

·         Considerable skill in interpersonal relations, oral and written communication, building teamwork, and a strong customer service orientation, preferred.

·         Skill in how to deal positively and effectively with diverse stakeholders, including museum patrons, corporate sponsors, city officials and staff, paid and volunteer museum personnel, media representatives, tourism representatives, and others, preferred.

·         Skill in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office Suite and Quicken Books, required.

·         Ability to effectively select, train, supervise and manage employees.

·         Ability to effectively promote the Museum and positively influence fundraising efforts.

·         Ability to prepare written proposals and grants for submission to state or federal agencies, or individual, corporate, or foundation organizations

·         Knowledge of administrative procedures, personnel management and supervisory techniques.

·         The ability to work for extended period on one’s feet, required.

·         The ability to walk up and down stairs, required.

·         The ability to lift and carry fifty pounds, required.

·         The ability to perform maintenance tasks such as small construction projects, snow removal, and cleaning.

·         The ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
