I will echo here IMLS as an excellent resource.  My institution (small, private, non-profit) just submitted a grant to them, and their programs that assist with building capacity may be ideal for you.

Hi Kasey,

To start off, I highly recommend the book "The Only Grant Writing Book You'll Ever Need"  by Karsh and Fox.  Its informative, includes tips on locating grants, discusses things like program evaluation, has input from grant-funders and most of all, is readable (something that is rare for books of that type).  Its a great resource.

Second, check your local library, depending on the size of the place you live (I used to work in Rochester, NY), libraries oftentimes keep resources on potential grant funders on hand.  I've also found grant funders that are more than willing to help you apply for their grant, although I imagine this varies quite a bit depending on where you are.

Finally, the Foundation Center (Foundationcenter.org) is a good resource for keeping track of whats happening in the world of NFP funding.

Happy grant writing!

Dear Museum-L,

I am currently looking for information and resources for writing grants. I work for a very small, non-profit historic site and we are looking for ways to expand our fundraising. We have no shortage of good ideas on how to make our site better, but we always come back to how are we going to fund it. I brought up the possibility of finding grants, but realized that I don't even know where to start, which is why I am turning to you.

Are there any good sites out there to learn how to write grants and/or where to find the grants themselves so that I can apply for them?

Thanks!
