*Collections Manager and Registrar*

 The Kiplinger Research Library at the Historical Society of Washington, DC
seeks a full-time Collections Manager & Registrar, who will be responsible
for the day-to-day oversight and preservation of the Society’s collections.
 Founded in 1894, the Historical Society is a community-supported
non-profit organization that collects, interprets, and shares the history
of our nation’s capital city.  Collections include over 100,000
photographs, fine arts, manuscripts, ephemera, objects, and books.

The Collections Manager will report to the Library Director but will work
directly with HSW volunteers, staff, and members of the collections
committee.  The successful candidate will have at least 2 to 3 years of
collections and staff management experience.  Excellent benefits include

*Job Summary*: The library’s collections manager is the staff member
charged with maintaining the Society’s historic collections and the records
that document them.  Major duties include but are not limited to:

   - Manage and maintain all aspects of collections care for a large
   collection of photographs, fine arts, archives, and objects, housed both on
   and offsite, by following and implementing accepted industry standards for
   processing and cataloguing materials, data entry, maintenance of systematic
   order, and routine care and conservation.
   - Supervise access to the library and archives and respond to public
   inquiries regarding collections.
   - Manage the collections inventory and assessment to be completed in
   FY2013 and FY2014.
   - Collaborate with the Library Director on larger library and
   collections initiatives, strategic planning, and collection development.
   - Work closely with the Library Director to develop and implement a
   digitization program, including hardware and software components, writing
   metadata guidelines, coordinating and supervising photography of
   collections, and supervising the day-to-day operations of the project.
   - Evaluate current standards of care and develop strategies to upgrade
   the physical condition of the collection and increase efficiency.
   - Monitor environmental conditions in the library, exhibition galleries,
   and collections storage areas and interpret data from environmental
   monitoring equipment.
   - Contribute to the documentation, exhibition, and presentation of the
   collection, including onsite, online and traveling exhibitions.
   - Develop, update and implement policies related to collections
   management issues.
   - Administer all incoming and outgoing loans.  Arrange packing,
   shipping, insurance, and conservation (if needed).  Produce incoming and
   outgoing receipts, condition reports, and other paperwork.
   - Recruit, hire, and supervise a staff of collections and exhibition
   interns every semester.
   - Work collaboratively with staff to produce written content about the
   collection for the website, social media sites, and other public outreach
   initiatives.
   - Participate in the budget preparation cycle and report to Library
   Director on income and expenses for quarterly and annual goals and any
   variables.  Develop revenue-generating initiatives, including grant
   writing and other business enterprises.
   - Participate in the development and execution of public programs.
   - Represent the Historical Society at local professional organizations
   to promote the mission of the Library.
   - Manage and assist in selected special projects and perform other
   related duties, as assigned


*Qualifications*
A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, history, American
studies, museum studies, or a closely related field is required.  At least
two to three years of professional experience working with museum
collections and collections management software is also required.
 Familiarity with or expertise in Washington, D.C. history preferred but
not required.

 The successful candidate will thoroughly understand collections management
industry standards, and have experience with proper methods for museum
registration, object care and storage, and exhibitions. Candidates will be
organized, proactive, and flexible with excellent analytical, problem
solving, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work
productively in a small office and collaborative environment. Strong oral
and written communication skills are important. S/he should be able to
establish and maintain effective working relations with staff, board,
interns and donors. S/he will have the capacity to multi-task, deal
effectively with deadlines and handle change at a moment’ notice in a
fast-paced environment. S/he must have the ability to work well with a
variety of individuals and audiences, and must have the organizational
skills necessary to manage a variety of responsibilities.

 Computer proficiencies should include collections databases (PastPerfect
Museum Software), Adobe and Office suites, and social media sites including
Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

 Some physical activity such as climbing ladders, lifting boxes up to 50
pounds, and kneeling is required, as are occasional evening and weekend
hours.
