Job Description:   Museum Director/Curator  

 

Job Summary:   

 

The Bannock County Historical Museum is a small museum with limited
resources; therefore the Museum Director/Curator under the direction of
Bannock County Historical Society Board is responsible for the everyday
operations of the Museum.  This in part entails archivist paperwork,
collection management, exhibition, volunteer recruitment, greeting visitors,
museum's cleanliness, daily cash operations, payroll and accounts payable
processing, writing grants, managing donations, supervising part-time
employee/s and volunteers,  and all other tasks associated with the Museum's
operations.  

 The position requires an enthusiastic person, who is visionary and who is
organized with superb interpersonal people skills dealing with the public,
society members, volunteers, and fellow employee/s.  

The position is an At-Will full-time position. 

 

Rate of Pay:   $14.75/hr.   

 

Vacation/Sick Leave:   Combined two weeks per year. 

 

Work Schedule:  12 months per year, 40 hours per week, required to attend
Board Meetings and Meeting of the Bannock County Historical Society.   The
days and hours of the Museum operation's varies from summer to winter.

 

Activities:

 

25%        Greets Museum visitors and answers questions, collects fees,
answer telephone, answer mail inquires, and maintain ongoing maintenance and
cleanliness of museum.  Open and close Museum.    Run a small gift shop. 

 

25%        Manages and monitors the operations of the Bannock County
Historical Museum, responsible for the organization, administration of the
Museum.   Work cooperatively with the Board in planning and implementing the
Museums activities & programs.

 

15%        Make presentation to school and community groups, research for
and write grants, write newspaper articles and  TV/ radio public service
announcements, write a periodic newsletter, write Annual Report,  conduct
group & school  Museum tours, take minutes of all Society Meetings

 

10%        Recruit and utilize volunteers.  Develop and implement programs
and activities to increase membership to the Historical Society.

 

 

10%        Research, plan, construct major museum's exhibits, and special
projects.  Design and construct small rotating exhibits to create diversity
and interest. 

5%          Process bi-weekly payroll and file all associated federal &
state tax reports, process and pay accounts payable on a monthly basis, keep
accurate accounting of all receipts disbursements and prepare monthly and
annual reports.  Prepare annual operating budget and monitors operations to
ensure compliance with annual budget.    

 

5%          Maintain accurate record of museum's inventory and help the
Board determine Museum acquisitions.

                                

5%          Helps select part-time employee/s.  Supervises and evaluates
part/time employee/s, responsible for training and supervision.    Supervise
volunteers.

Equipment Operation:

Uses office equipment (e.g. computer, calculator, cash register) and 

small hand and power tools.

 

 

 

Training and Education:

Prefer a Bachelor's Degree in museum training, history, or equivalent
specialized training or experience in which required skills are developed.
Knowledge of local history is desired. 

Work Experience:

Four years of specific work experience with demonstrated competence.  As the
discretion of the Historical Society Board experience, training and
education can be interchangeable.

 

Decision Making:

Requires research and recommending standards, procedures, and methods.
Decisions may significantly affect the museum.  Makes decisions where there
is uncertainty in approach, methods, evaluation techniques and technological
preferences.

 

Equipment and Building Care:

Identify and arrange for repair and maintenance building and equipment.
Responsible for cleanliness of Museum facilities (bathrooms, display areas,
storage areas, library, etc.)

 

Responsibility for Assets:

Responsible for the collection, safety, integrity, and keeping accurate
records of the collection.  Responsible for cash deposits.

 

Working Environment:

General office conditions prevail with some custodial/maintenance, exhibit
construction responsibilities.  A major part of time will be only employee
in museum.   Work is subject to some interruptions.  

 

Interactions with others:

Contact with Historical Society Board, society members, patrons, county
officials, employees, children, and outside agencies require tact and
interaction skills to achieve objectives.  

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Plans and directs work time behavior of part-time employee/s.  Plan and
directs activities and work time of volunteers.   Makes recommendation to
Board for employment retention, discipline of part-time employee/s. 

 

Safety:

Develop museum work rules and procedures with safety as a primary goal.
