Also – note that the location of the archivist job is a very small town in
Kansas. I would think for someone who is more local and may be looking for
experience it would be fine opportunity – not for someone who is from far
afield and needs to move there, and might not anyway, because it is a very
small town in Kansas (this coming from a very small town in PA). I think
it’s great they even were able to scrape that $$ together to pay someone in
this economy. I hope they find a terrific person!

No, it is not ideal or even close to it. But I suppose the choice is not
hiring anyone at all because you can’t live up to a potential employee’s
expectations, or throwing out the net and seeing who’s out there.

Dear Ann,

As an emerging museum professional sometimes these are the jobs that are
available for us to get our foot in the door. A foot in for a year is still
one more year of experience, contacts and potential opportunities to work on
other things . I work two part time jobs at about that rate just to be in a
museum and fully employed at the moment. The pay etc. might not be glamorous
but if you gave me the choice between a museum and Wal-Mart I know I would
go with the museum.

That's just my perspective on the field at the moment. Opinions my own.
Thank you for bringing it up, however.

Best,

Laura Barry

Quite a lot we do not know here...Size of museum, size of budget,
competition for jobs in area for starters. Perhaps they are hoping to

This might get me kicked off this list, but I am flabbergasted by that job
ad. A required master's degree, a detailed job description, and yet the pay
is only $10 an hour with no mention of benefits (I'll eat crow if there are
benefits), PLUS its only a one-year position? Seriously? I can work at
Wal-Mart for better compensation (plus benefits!). What a joke.
