In May 2012, the Virginia Historical Society opened an exhibition entitled An Artist’s Story: Civil War Drawings by Edwin Forbes. John Edwin Forbes served as a war correspondent and was “embedded” with the Union Army from 1862 to 1864. His field sketches appeared as engravings in the pages of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, and they did much to shape public perceptions about the American Civil War—then and now. When An Artist’s Story closes in December, we plan to make selected drawings available to museums and cultural institutions as a traveling exhibition.

 

This exhibition is approximately 1,000 square feet and features forty-five (45) original pen-and-ink illustrations based on the artist’s wartime sketches and used to illustrate his memoir, which was published in 1890. The exhibition can be rented in four-month intervals from March 2012 through December 2015. To receive a summary of the exhibition, an object list, and label copy, contact:
