Leah,
Well, Bravo, Anna! The guards were not only friendly and engaging, but well informed and open to sharing information. Unlike some museums, where you feel like the guards are lying in wait for you to make a misstep. Leah is right – this is a real opportunity that most institutions are missing. However, the DMA is doing a wonderful job, across the board, in this area!

Interesting you mention Dallas Museum of Art before i received my current position i was a gallery attendant their and assisted in the security department. It you are interested you can contact myself or Lance Childers at DMA he is the head of security and the one you would want to talk to about their training.

Leah,I was recently at the Dallas Museum of Art and had such a wonderful experience with their security guards, that I even commented to the head of security on the way out! You might contact them and ask if they do any special training.Mary Mikel Stump

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Security Guards and Visitor Experience Training
Hi All,We have been putting an increased emphasis on examining new ways to improve the visitor experience at our museum. One area that seems untapped here (and by art museums in general) is the critical role of security guards in the visitor experience.I would like to know if anyone is aware of any models at other museums, or at your own museum, for training and communication for security in this area.Thank you!LeahLeah Fox, Director of Public ProgramsCurrier Museum of Art150 Ash StreetManchester, NH 03104Visit our Online Curriculum for Educators at http://curriculum.currier.org.CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: This e-mail message, including all attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient (s) and may contain confidential and privileged information.
