LABORATORY TECHNICIAN – Seminole Tribe of Florida Tribal Historic Preservation Office

 

 

NATURE OF WORK

 

The Laboratory Technician will perform regular functions of the Archaeological Laboratory of the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office (STOF-THPO).  

 

Responsibilities of this position include (1) assistance to the Laboratory Manager in processing artifacts received at the laboratory (2) to wash, catalog, and prepare artifacts for analysis and curation (3) the support of senior staff and consulting analysts with collection needs; and (4) to assist staff members with project needs and the needs of the THPO as a whole. The Laboratory Technician is a non-exempt, full time position which reports to the Laboratory Manager and also works under the direction of the Collections Manager.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Assists with maintaining and organizing all incoming laboratory projects based on the needs of the THPO.

Assists with project related processing of artifacts, ecofacts, and documents in accordance with sound principles of conservation, project quality, and economy of labor and time.

Assists with artifact and ecofact processing including: accessioning, immediate reception of field collections (re-bagging, re-labeling, and documentation checks as needed), judicious cleaning, sorting, artifact identification, tracking of location and processing stage, and preparations for long-term curation.

Performs research and analysis on prehistoric and historic artifacts from the STOF’s areas of interest.

As appropriate, presents group and individual research and findings (1) to the Tribal community and public in forums such as site tours, school visits, public talks, etc. and(2) to professional audiences in the form of scientific papers at conferences and publications.

Provides project support to the Collections Staff and the THPO as a whole.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

·         Ability to work under direct supervision and/or independently in order to accomplish project goals.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, anthropology, archaeology, or an allied discipline with one years’ experience in the care of archaeological collections in an archaeological or museum laboratory. The incumbent should have a solid interest in the maintenance of archaeological collections and the ability to interact with and support specialists in the analysis of archaeological collections. Relevant specialized experience with the study of archaeological materials would be helpful: possibilities include human osteology, forensic science, faunal analysis, and paleoethnobotanical analysis.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Typically, the incumbent will be required to use standard computer input (keyboard) and output (desktop monitor) devices. Occasional archaeological field work may be required, which

involves long periods of strenuous exertion as well as heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds.
