Job Summary:

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences seeks a dynamic Chief Curator to develop a roadmap for the exhibition program of its new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Reporting to the head of the Museum, the Chief Curator will oversee the design and development of the museum's permanent galleries, balancing Academy member and staff involvement, scholarly input, and the museum's overall strategic goals. The Chief Curator will also aid in efforts to build the museum's collection and acquisitions, and will serve as a member of the museum's senior management team.

Candidates should bring substantial knowledge and passion for film studies, filmmaking, and/or film history (MA required, PhD preferred); a minimum ten year record of organizing major exhibitions or equivalent experience; significant curatorial or equivalent experience; and a proven ability to cultivate donors and collectors to support the institution's artistic goals and priorities.

Essential Job Functions:

Liaises with outside design team, Academy managerial and curatorial staff, and Academy membership, film scholars and others to create and implement the overall vision, design, and content of the core (permanent) exhibits at the museum.
Oversees the growth of the museum curatorial department.
Conducts collection research and proposes/organizes regular collections-based exhibitions.
Develops strategy for film-related traveling exhibitions that advance the museum's mission, vision, and strategic direction.
Regularly networks with peers nationally and internationally to develop collection exchanges, co-organize exhibitions, and tour Academy-originated projects.
Works with the Museum leadership and senior staff to cultivate trustees, collectors, donors (including foundations), and filmmakers for gifts to the collection, acquisition funds, program support, and capital support; provides programs, cultivation and stewardship for museum support groups and selected major donors; participates in fundraising events.
Supervises curatorial staff, manages curatorial budget, and works with and through other departments to advance the museum's artistic and program goals.
Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the position.
Requirements:

Educational and Experience Preparation: Requires Master's degree in film studies, film history or other related area (Ph.D. preferred) with substantial knowledge of at least one area of motion picture history and/or production; ten or more years professional curatorial experience; established record in organizing major exhibitions; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others; publications and lectures in a relevant field is desirable.
Physical & Dexterity Requirements: Sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Occasionally may require lifting 25 pounds, opening boxes or packages, and stretching or reaching. The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.
Working Conditions: Staff will work in general office and museum conditions with no known exposure to environmental hazards. Work may require evening and weekend hours.
Contact with Others: The position involves a significant amount of contact with museum staff, volunteers, and the public. This involves frequent interactions with Academy members, motion picture experts, Academy staff, vendors, donors, and other professionals that may be of a sensitive or confidential nature. Discretion and sound judgment is required. Staff must be able to relate well to individuals with a variety of backgrounds and positively represent the museum in these contacts.
