The Sewall-Belmont House & Museum located on Capitol Hill has an immediate opening for a full-time Collections & Facilities Manager to oversee the care and preservation of one of the premier women's history collections in the country.  The National Woman's Party (NWP) collection housed at the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum is one of the most important resources for the study of the suffrage movement and the campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment. This unique collection, including the nation's first feminist library, documents the mass political movement for women's full citizenship in the 20th century, both in the United States and throughout the world. The collection of over 30,000 items includes books, scrapbooks, political cartoons, textiles, photographs, organizational records, fine arts, decorative arts, and artifacts produced primarily by women, about women.

This is a full time position with the incumbent reporting directly to the Executive Director.  The successful candidate will be a seasoned professional with at least 3-5 years of collections and staff management experience.

JOB SUMMARY:
The museum collections manager is the primary staff member charged with maintaining the Museum's historic collections and the records that document them. Major duties include but are not limited to:


*         Manage and maintain all aspects of collections care for a large collection of records and artifacts, housed both on and offsite, by following and implementing accepted museum standards for processing and cataloging materials, data entry, maintenance of systematic order, and routine care and conservation

*         Evaluate current standards of care and develop strategies to upgrade the physical condition of the collection and increase efficiency

*         Oversee the documentation, exhibition, and presentation of the collection, including onsite, online and traveling exhibitions

 *   Perform routine care and maintenance of galleries and object storage areas, ensuring the security of collections, monitoring environmental conditions in permanent storage and galleries, removing and replacing sensitive artifacts and making storage mounts

*         Develop, update and implement policies related to collections management issues, including integrated pest management, emergency preparedness, and a cyclical maintenance plan

*         Administer all incoming and outgoing loans.  Arrange packing, shipping, insurance, and conservation (if needed).  Produce incoming and outgoing receipts, condition reports, and other paperwork

*         Schedule researchers and respond to research inquiries and other requests from institutions and the public

*         Develop revenue-generating initiatives including writing grants,  managing the Adopt-An-Artifact program, and current and future traveling exhibits

*         Conduct tours of the historic house and library as needed including those for potential funders, VIP's, and board members

*         Work collaboratively with staff to produce written content about the collection for the website, social media sites, and other public outreach initiatives

*         Participate in the development and execution of public programs

*         Recruit, hire, and supervise a staff of collections and exhibition interns every semester

 *   Participate in the budget preparation cycle, manage annual department budget, and report to Executive Director on income and expenses for quarterly and annual goals and any variables
 *   Represent SBHM at local professional organizations to promote the mission of the Museum
 *   Act as the primary staff member for the day to day operation and maintenance of the site's building systems and equipment.  Work will involve overseeing all maintenance contracts and yearly equipment inspection and certification.

*         Ensure the cleanliness and professional presentation of the Museum at all times (both interior and exterior) and supervise maintenance personnel.  Ensure the availability and organization of supplies, tools, and ordering supplies as needed to ensure operational readiness.

*         Supervise special buildings and grounds projects on a daily basis, including coordinating with the National Park Service on landscaping and grounds maintenance projects

*         Assist in supervising all construction/ restoration projects

 *   Manage and assist in selected special projects and perform other related duties, as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The position requires a M.A. or equivalent experience in museum studies, library and information science, or a related field and at least 3-5 years of experience in museum registration, collections management, or exhibitions, as well as a familiarity with current registration practices.  Additional education should include a Bachelor of Arts (or comparable experience) in American history, women's history, women's studies, or related field.

The successful candidate will thoroughly understand collections principles and practices, collections management issues and trends, and exhibition development.  A background in historic properties is preferred but not required. Candidates will be highly organized, proactive, and flexible with excellent analytical, problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work productively in a small office and collaborative environment.  Strong oral and written communication skills are important.  S/he should be able to establish and maintain effective working relations with staff, board, interns and donors. S/he will have the capacity to multi-task, deal effectively with deadlines and handle change at a moment's notice in a fast-paced environment.  S/he must have the ability to work well with a variety of individuals and audiences, and must have the organizational skills necessary to manage a variety of responsibilities.

Computer proficiencies should include collections databases (PastPerfect Museum Software), Adobe and Office suites, and social media sites including Facebook and Twitter.

Must be able to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, and maneuver through a 200 year old building via 4-5 flights of stairs.  Some nights and weekends are required.
