try your united way -- often there are networking meetings and also workshops
read old book    "one minute manager"

learn about your board member recruitment committee and selection       process and by-laws in detail.
become friends with your org. lawyer and other consultants -
            ask them what to look out for
find a local mentor
keep eagle eye on budget
review how YOU will be reviewed! --
      what is the basis of your personal evaluation and   who does it?
learn who is a relative and friend of whom? Board and employees
check out by-laws re board member terms    (LIMITS?)
            who has been on board 100 years -- or 27 terms
keep a detailed personal day book the who where whens etc

Hi Michael
You've probably read a tonne of books but I would strongly recommend adding another one to the mix - The First 90 Days, by Michael Watkins. It helps you map out those crucial first three months in a leadership role and is particularly geared to first-timers. Good luck!

Hi all,

Do any of you out there have any advice for someone who is about to become an executive director for the first time? I’ve done as much reading and research as I can to this point, but I know that learning doesn’t all come from books. If there are any peers or colleagues of mine that have any tips or kernels of knowledge that they would like to pass on, I’m all ears.
