Subject: Question re scrimshaw

Can anyone tell us if a piece of carved whalebone is authentic?  It was found in a wastecan at a retail store.  Features a scene with ships on the front, labelled Whaler Topaz off Marquesas Is Jan 1840 and apparently signed James Allen.. Is in very good shape, little discoloration.
