In the 1950s, artist Benjamin Byrer painted seven large murals for the Hall of the Universe at Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science. These murals were "temporarily" placed in storage in the 1980s, when the Hall of the Universe was replaced by a new thematic exhibit on optics, light, and perception.

In 1991, The Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science building became an educational annex of the newly opened Carnegie Science Center. Officials of The Carnegie Science Center chose not to redisplay these murals. Hence, they were given back to the artist.

This artist, a native of Canton, Ohio, then decided to donate the murals to his hometown planetarium, the Hoover-Price Planetarium in Canton. These murals now hang in the Jane Williams Mahoney Mezzanine of the Hoover-Price Planetarium.

Colleagues,

I would be interested in hearing how other museums have dealt with deaccessions returned to the living artist. If you have experience in this area and would be willing to share, please contact me off list at [log in to unmask]">[log in to unmask].

Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Gail
